Welcome to the City of Fort Myers

The City of Palms! Take a drive down McGregor Boulevard and you’ll see where Fort Myers got its name. The City of Fort Myers is home to the Thomas Edison and Henry Ford Winter Estates, and a trendy downtown area along the Caloosahatchee River called the “River District.” The actual city limits only span 40 square miles of land, and that’s what we’re focusing on here today.

More About the City of Fort Myers

Size Doesn’t Matter

Don’t let the small city limit boundaries fool you, the City of Fort Myers is packed with action. Starting up near Tice, and running along the Caloosahatchee River just past the Midpointe Bridge, the city limits span as far east as Gateway and as far south as the Southwest Florida International Airport.

Hint of History

The downtown historic district lives up to its name. Not only is it home to the famous Thomas Edison and Henry Ford Winter Estates, but the city also has a number of historic buildings and a war history of its own. Named after Colonel Abraham Myers, the actual 140-acre Fort Myers was used in the Third Seminole War and abandoned in 1858. Fort Myers was also used by the Confederate blockade runners and cattle ranchers during the American Civil War.

Set Out on Foot

There’s a lot to see by foot along First Street in downtown Fort Myers. Old buildings from the early 1900s have been preserved and repurposed such as the Sidney & Berne Davis Arts Center, and the Hotel Indigo, both of which served as the post office for Fort Myers throughout the early years of development. You’ll also find large, rustic sculptures while walking the streets downtown. These are creations of Colombian artist, Edgardo Carmona, who depicts the work of musicians, street performers and other fun tradesmen using rust-colored metals.

A Place For The Arts

Art is actually a big “to do” in the City of Fort Myers. Every first Friday of the month, the River District Alliance hosts an Art Walk where the streets are blocked off from vehicle traffic, and local artists set up their displays for passerby’s to admire. Artists aren’t the only ones who get love. Every second Friday the Alliance hosts a Mystery Walk, every third Friday is Music Walk, and every fourth Friday is Pet Walk. There is lots to do, so find some good walking shoes!

Four Meals A Day

Limiting yourself to simply three meals a day might not be enough. Fort Myers is packed with award-winning and local-favorite restaurants, bars, and cafes. Ford’s Garage is a must-do, along with the Lodge and Firestone’s Sky Bar. There are also a number of bars and restaurants with amazing wine pairings, plus, good music and dancing when the sun goes down!

Get Down To Business

It’s not all fun and games in the City of Fort Myers. There is an ever-growing business community that participates in the daily office shuffle by bus, bike, foot or rideshare. The Harbourside Event Center downtown hosts a number of conferences, shows, and events throughout the year, including the Annual Boat Show and other popular trade shows. So what are you waiting for? Get out and explore the City of Palms!
